Abstract

A covering material for a frame, e.g. a model or regular size aircraft frame, comprises a flexible clear heat shrinkable film of polyester resin coated on one side with only a layer, a heat sensitive adhesive, pressure sensitive adhesive, or solvent sensitive adhesive, containing colouring, e.g. a dye pigment. The adhesive may (1) be pressure sensitive consisting of an acrylic resin, e.g. an acrylic polymer or copolymer; (2) include an inoperative, i.e. non-adhesive, portion; or (3) be dry and non-tacky. Tacky adhesive may have a layer of paper releasably attached thereto or may be rendered dry and nontacky by the application thereto of a particulate material, e.g. zinc stearate. The frame, e.g. a model or regular size aircraft frame, may be covered by applying a predetermined length of the covering material to a section of the frame so that the film is the outer side and thereafter applying heat to the film to cause the film to shrink tautly to the contours of the frame and the adhesive to bond the film to the frame. After application of the material to the frame the material is smoothed out so as to press the adhesive layer to the area of the frame. Heat may be applied to spaced apart areas of the film, e.g. at the perimeters of the frame, to cause a first portion of the adhesive layer to bond a first part of the film with the frame, heat is then applied to a second part of the film between the areas to cause the film to become more pliable and to cause the second portion of the adhesive to bond a second part of the film to the frame, and cooling the second part of the film to cause the film to shrink tautly to the contours of the frame. The frame may be made from a porous material, e.g. balsa wood, and heat applied to the film causes the face of the adhesive layer adjacent to the porous frame to impregnate the pores and to make a secure bond therewith.
