Abstract

1,104,151. Hydraulic couplings. HOLSET ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. 29 Oct., 1965 [14 Nov., 1964], No. 46467/64. Heading F2C. In a shear-type viscous fluid coupling, for use, e.g. in a vehicle fan drive, a cast iron driving disc 10 is disposed, in facial and circumferential close-fitting relationship, within an annular chamber 14 which contains silicone fluid and is provided in a two-part, heat dissipating, unalloyed aluminium driven member 16, the driving disc locating the driven member and being provided with non- metallic facial thrust and circumferential journal bearing facings 26, 28 to prevent metal - to - metal contact between the driving disc and the driven member. The driving disc comprises a shaft-mounting hub 12. The driven member 16 comprises a closure disc 24 abutting and bolted to a planar radially outer portion 20 of a recessed part 18, the outer portion 20 having an axially directed lip 22 rolled over the disc 24 for sealing and to augment the bolts. Cooling fins 30, 32 and seals are provided. The bearing facings 26, 28 may be of granulated cork material or fibre, e.g. asbestos, composition, in each case incorporating fillers and binders. A fluid reservoir is provided by recessing the driving disc.
