Abstract
A steel workpiece is surface hardened by heating it rapidly to form an austenitic layer metastable at room temperature using a plasma torch having no constricting aperture for the plasma (see Fig., not shown), and transforming the layer by applying further energy, preferably also effected with the aid of the plasma torch, into a fine-grained martensitic structure. The torch is provided with an additional charge carrier source to prevent deionizing the plasma. The cross-section and intensity of the plasma beam are controlled by varying the current intensity of the arc, and the quantity and type of gas conveyed so that the plasma beam can conform to the surface to be hardened. For continuous surface treatments, e.g. of cutting edges of tools or slideways, the shape of the plasma beam and rate at which energy is supplied through the beam are varied during treatment to conform changing configuration of the surface to be hardened. The torch may be operated with D.C. or A.C. Prior processes are disclosed wherein surface heating is effected by electron or laser beams.
