Abstract

1,103,809. Segmenting liquid streams. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 18 March, 1966 [26 March, 1965], No. 12003/66. Heading B1X. [Also in Division B8] An apparatus for separating a flowing medium, such as a liquid, into individual sections 22 by forcing into the liquid, at predetermined intervals, a second medium such as a gas, comprises a body 5 having a duct 6 for the liquid, and at least one further duct 8 leading into the duct 6 for introducing therein the second medium via a dosing device 19. As applied to chromatography the liquid is fed by a pump 1 through a column 3 into the duct 6 which connects with a duct 9, the latter communicating with an outlet 15 via a flexible pipe 10, a capillary reactor 11 and a photometric measuring cell 13. The dosing device 19, which may be a pump, draws a gas, such as argon, from a pressurized container 18 and forces it at pre-determined intervals into the stream of liquid thereby separating the latter into separate sections. In modifications, a further medium may be introduced into the liquid either into the continuous stream in the duct 6 or into the separated sections 22 in the duct 9. In order to assist the introduction of the gas into the liquid at the junction point 7 of the two ducts 6, 9 the flow of liquid through the duct 6 may be slowed down or stopped momentarily by means of a pulsator 24.
