Abstract

1,103,688. Laminates. REYNOLDS METALS CO. 24 March, 1965 [25 March, 1964], No. 12530/65. Heading B5N. A method of laminating a porous sheet material to a base material by means of a thermoplastic adhesive in which moisture is applied to a surface of the porous material in sufficient amount to substantially prevent penetration of the porous material by the adhesive but insufficient to cause rupture of the porous material, and the moistened surface of the porous material is superimposed on a surface of the base material which has been coated with the thermoplastic adhesive in molten condition, the sheets being pressed together to form a laminate. The moisture is preferably applied in the form of steam. Specified base materials are paper, synthetic resin film, metal foil, e.g. aluminium and a glued composite of paper and metal, e.g. aluminium. The specified porous sheet material is paper and the specified adhesive is microcrystalline wax or a mixture thereof with paraffin wax. In Fig. 1, a composite of paper glued to aluminium foil is passed from roll 10 with its paper side downwards through wax coating rolls 12, the coated composite being fed over chill rolls 14 and 15 and to coded laminating rolls 1 and 2 where it is united with a tissue web 4 which has been steam treated at 7.
