Abstract

Deuterated hydrocarbons are obtained by deuterating the corresponding hydrogen-containing hydrocarbons with deuterium oxide in the presence of an alkaline deuteroxide (defined), a metal catalyst of the platinum group and a deuterium peroxide promoter. The deuterium peroxide promoter and the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal alkaline deuteroxide are preferably prepared jointly by reacting an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal peroxide with deuterium oxide. The preferred metal catalyst is obtained by reducing a suspension of Adam's platinum oxide catalyst in deuterium oxide with deuterium gas. The deuteration of anthracene is carried out in a closed vessel with vigorous shaking at an elevated temperature.ALSO:Deuterated organic compounds are obtained by deuterating the corresponding hydrogen-containing organic compound with deuterium oxide in the presence of an alkaline deuteroxide as hereinafter defined, a metal catalyst of the platinum group and a deuterium peroxide promoter. Suitable starting materials include hydrogen-containing fatty acids, dicarboxylic acids, ketones, alcohols or hydrocarbons and the deuteration is carried out in a closed vessel with vigorous shaking at an elevated temperature. Octadecanoic (i.e. stearic) acid and camphor are per-deuterated in this way.
