Abstract
1,103,123. Extruding polyethylene terephthalate &c. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 10 May, 1966 [10 May, 1965], No. 20714/66. Headings B5A and B5B. In a process for extruding highly polymeric material susceptible to hydrolytic and oxidative degradation such as linear polyesters, polycarbonates and in particular polyethylene terephthalate, the polymer in undried particulate form is fed from feeder 19 to extruder 12, which may be a heated twin-screw extruder, to join similar material in melt form which is moving through the extruder in an oxygenfree environment. As shown, blended melt thereafter passes through a filter 13 to a nozzle 14 and the extrudate, which may be a film, is received on a quenching device 15. An oxygen-free environment within extruder 12 is achieved either by applying vacuum to vent 22 or by circulation of a dry inert gas such as nitrogen. According to the invention, degradation, measurable as a decrease in intrinsic viscosity, is further prevented by the flow of melt through the extruder which is derived either from source 10, which may be a continuous polymerization unit or batch autoclave, or from initial melting of particulate material. In either case part of the melt is recycled via conduit 16. With such recycling, polymer from source 10 may only be used initially with subsequent 100% use of particulate material. The particulate material is preferably reclaimed waste and is not necessarily identical to the melt. A further feeder 21 is provided so that additives such as fillers, pigments, metallic particles, delusterants, anti-static agents and flame-retardants may be introduced. Seven examples are given and in one of these the particulate material differs from the melt, viz. a copolyester of ethylene terephthalate/neopentyl terephthalate is added to polyethylene terephthalate. Additives specifically mentioned are silicon dioxide, aluminium powder and a green pigment. Several examples relate to the production of film which may or may not be subsequently stretched.
