Abstract
1,102,949. Making electrical connections. AMP Inc. 3 May, 1966 [7 May, 1965], No. 19373/66. Headings B3A and B3Q. Apparatus for joining wires (4, 6), Fig. 1 (not shown), by electrical connectors (2) comprises a die assembly (78, 80, 82), Fig. 5 (not shown), having a slot (74) between its ends co-operating with a shear blade 136 for trimming the wire, an anvil 134 cooperating with the die, feed mechanism 138 for feeding connectors to the anvil, and mechanism 118, 122 for moving the anvil towards the die to trim wire in the slot (74), and crimp a connector on the anvil to the wire. The apparatus is supported from a cable by a frame, as described in Specification 1,102,949, and includes side members 66 (68) formed with slots 108 (114) for guiding a slide 98 carrying the anvil. The slide comprises side plates 100 spaced by blocks 102, 104 through which pass pins 106, 110 running in the guide slots 108 (114). Pivoted on the slide 98 is a bell-crank lever 144, 150 carrying a spring- pressed, feed-finger 138 on a pivot 142. Crimping strokes of the slide carry limb 150 of the lever against an abutment 72 and withdraw the finger 138 to engage the next connector of a strip of connectors, which is similar to that described in Specification 1,102,948, rearward movement of the strip being prevented by springs (147), Fig. 15 (not shown), which engage the leading connector. Operation of the anvil-slide 98 is by a pneumatic cylinder 130, a lever 122 and a link 118. The strip of connectors passes through guides 154 secured to the slide, the connector carrying strips (5), Fig. 12 (not shown), passing through slots (198) in pivoted blocks (192) on opposite sides of the slide. Shearing.-During the crimping stroke, the blocks (192) engage abutments (84), Fig. 13 (not shown), and are turned about pivots (196), thus severing the plastics lateral bridge supporting the leading connector, which is on the anvil. Adjacent each block (192) are shear plates (200), on springs (206), which sever the side strips (5) as they leave the guide slots (198). The ends of wire are trimmed by the blade 136, as described above. Ejectors: articles transferring.-On the outside of the side plates 66 (68) are two pairs of pivoted fingers (158, 160), Fig. 8 (not shown), the wire (4) being placed in a slot (162) in the fingers (158), looped around projections 92 and pulled through the slot 74 to extend through slots (88, Fig. 2) in plastics guides (86). Springs (168) hold the fingers (158) against stops (170), and during a crimping stroke, the guide-pin 106 deflects a spring (174) without moving the fingers (158). On the return stroke of the crimping slide, pin 106 rotates the fingers (158), stripping the crimped connector and transferring it to a position (Fig. 10) in which the wires are engaged by the second fingers (178) and transferred to a collecting fence (190). The spring (174) deflects, allowing the pin 106 to pass, and the second fingers (178) are oscillated by connection to the guide-pin 110 and a link (186).
