Abstract

1,102,631. Winding metal strip. SOCIETE DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES DE CREIL C.O.M.E.C. 18 Feb., 1966 [16 Feb., 1965], No. 6842/66. Heading B3E. [Also in Division B6] Apparatus for winding a plurality of juxtaposed metal strips on the same arbour comprises separate clip means for holding the end of each strip and friction discs interposed between adjacent clip means and keyed on the arbour to entrain the clip means, and thus the strip coils forming thereon, in rotation with the arbour with a torque proportional to the axial pressure of the discs on the clip means. Strips a, b, c longitudinally slit from a web are secured at their ends to clips 10 supported on bearers 12 keyed to a rotated winding spindle 11. Friction discs 14 between adjacent clips 10 are also keyed to the spindle 11, the assembly of discs 14, clips 10 and bearers 12 being subjected to axial pressure by an hydraulically urged clamping cap 16. In operation any variation in tension between the strips being wound is taken up by the slipping of the appropriate clips 10 relative to their adjacent friction discs 14. After winding the cap 16 is removed and the assembly of coiled strip, clips and bearers is pushed off on to the arms of an unloader E which rotates about a vertical axis to present the assembly to a rockable unloading member F which feeds one section of coil, bearer and clip at a time on to a roller conveyer G. At a station H the coil is separated from the clip and bearer which are returned by conveyers I, J to the winding station. When winding aluminium strip, the clips may be in the form of cardboard sleeves to which the strips are secured by adhesive tape, recovery of the sleeves being, in this case, unnecessary.
