Abstract

Polymers subject to oxidative degradation are stabilized by addition thereto of at least 0.001% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of a phenolic resin of the formula <FORM:1102557/C3/1> in which n is an integer of at least 2, R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represent hydrogen or an alkyl group and may be the same or different, provided that no position ortho or para to an OH group is occupied by hydrogen, Y and Z, which may be the same or different, each represent an alkylene, alkylidene, alkylidene dioxy, carboxy, thio or dithio radical, provided that at most one of Z and Y represent a sulphur containing radical or an alkylene radical. The polymers described as being subject to oxidative degradation are polyolefins especially polyethylene, an ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymer and polypropylene. Phenolic resins as described above wherein Z represents a thio or dithio radical and Y represents an alkylene, alkylidene, alkylidene dioxy or carboxy radical, are new compounds. Examples describe the preparation of such polymers from (a) 4,41-thiobis (6-tert-butyl-m-cresol) and formaldehyde and (b) 4,41-butyl-idenebis (6-tert-butyl-m-cresol) and sulphur dichloride. These two polymers are used to stabilize the polyolefins referred to above.
