Abstract

1,102,134. Sawing. PHILLIPS ENGINEERING Ltd. 9 Jan., 1967 [27 Jan., 1966], No. 3655/66. Heading B5L. Apparatus for use in opening chests or boxes such as tea chests comprises an upwardly directed support member 20, 21 for engaging the underside of a chest 10 to be opened, cutting means 14, 15 disposed at a level adjacent the support member and adapted to be brought into engagement with the chest just above the underside thereof, means 11 for effecting relative movement between the cutting means and chest so that at least a portion of the peripheral wall of the chest is cut through, and means 27 for inverting the chest after the cutting has been effected. As described the chest is moved between a first pair of cutting means, comprising rotary saws 14, 15 driven by motors 18, 19, by a conveyer 11 having flights 13 which engage the chest and move it along the supports 20, 21. The saw 15 is fixed and associated with a guide, and the saw 14 together with a guide 25 is urged by springs 22 towards the fixed guides. After opposite sides of the chest have been cut by the saws 14, 15, the chest is carried by a second conveyer between similar saws 16, 17 and guides for cutting the remaining sides. Thereafter the chest is conveyed into a drum rotatable about a horizontal axis to invert the chest. In another embodiment, the saws are arranged along a single conveyer or two conveyers in line and the chest is turned through 90‹ in the space between the two pairs of saws.
