Abstract

] <PICT:1101763/C3/1) Ethylene is polymerized in an apparatus comprising a pressure reaction chamber having first and second openings for respectively passing ethylene into and reaction products out of said chamber, a tubular member disposed within the chamber and having two open ends, one open end being coincident with one of the chamber openings and the other open end being spaced from the other chamber opening, the said other open end of the said tubular member being wholly within the chamber and facing in a direction away from the said other chamber opening, and means for agitating the contents of the said chamber. In one embodiment carried out in the apparatus of Fig. 1, compressed ethylene is introduced into autoclave 1 through opening 4 and reacted therein, the catalyst being added with the ethylene or through a separate inlet (not shown) near opening 4. Ethylene is also fed, with or without catalyst, through port 7, to cool stirrer motor 3 and thence passes through port 10 to autoclave 1. The reaction mixture enters coiled tube 8 through opening 6 and is removed via opening 5. In a second embodiment, ethylene and a catalyst are fed into tube 8 via opening 5 and preheated by heat exchange with reaction product present in autoclave 1, into which the preheated ethylene passes via opening 6. The product is removed through opening 4. Tube 8 may also by in the form of straight tube sections connected by U-tubes and arranged parallel to one another. The catalyst used in the examples is di-tertiary butyl-peroxide. Other peroxides or oxygen may also be used.
