Abstract

1,101,515. Woodworking. BARTELSWERKE G.m.b.H. 12 April, 1965 [13 April, 1964], No. 15391/65. Heading B5L. A method of gluing joints or of assembling veneer pieces or other parts edge to edge comprises first placing the veneer pieces together and then applying a carrier-less bonding agent to the joint, the agent being a water soluble expandable and shrinkable synthetic resin such as polyvinyl alcohol which has been previously dissolved in, or swollen with, water and is in the form of threads, strips, coils or the like. The foil may be swollen by contact with a sponge supplied with water at a temperature of 20‹ C. or over, say 60‹ to 90‹ C., before application to the joint of the veneered pieces which are laid with the surface which is to be attached to a workpiece upwardly. The shrinking action of the foil acts to pull the joint tightly together. Alternatively the polyvinyl alcohol is stirred with water into a viscous solution and poured out in a sheet or as individual webs on to the veneers. the water evaporating to leave the polyvinyl alcohol which pulls the joint together. The joined veneer pieces may be bonded to a workpiece by a urea glue. The foil may be perforated.
