Abstract

1,101,069. Electro-physical measurement. ALFA-LAVAL AKTIEBOLAG. Jan. 9, 1967 [Jan. 14, 1966], No. 1076/67. Heading G1N. The water content of butter or margarine is measured by passing it between the electrodes of a capacitor, the electrodes being heated to prevent deposits of solids on the electrodes. In one embodiment, an assembly comprising a measuring electrode 11 and a compensating electrode 12, separated by an insulated bush 13 are mounted by insulating end-pieces 14, 15 within a tube 1 through which the butter &c. is passed and which forms the earthed electrode. The electrodes 11, 12 are heated by an electric heater 22 and the tube 1 is heated by a jacket through which a heated fluid is circulated. Alternatively the electrodes 11, 12 may be heated by fluid passed through the end supports. All electrodes are sheathed in lowadhesion plastics, e.g. P. T. F. E. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) the earthed electrode forms the heated central core with coaxial measuring and compensating electrodes, the whole assembly being housed within a heated chamber.
