Abstract
Temporary artificial dentures are manufactured by a method which comprises the steps of (1) fabricating a model of a person's edentulous ridge tissue, (2) preparing a denture base having artificial teeth thereon and which will fit readily on said model of the ridge tissue, (3) fabricating a matrix having an occlusal surface thereon complemental to said artificial teeth, (4) positioning the matrix and said denture base with the artificial teeth thereon in relative dispositions causing the occlusal surfaces thereof to functionally occlude, (5) placing a coating of pliable material on the inner surface of said denture base which normally contacts the person's edentulous ridge tissue, said pliable material being of a consistency capable of being deformed under pressure not substantially greater than the person's diastolic blood pressure and characterized by the property of retaining such consistency for an extended period, (6) mounting the coated denture base on the model while maintaining the matrix and artificial teeth in functionally occluded disposition and (7) then placing the coated denture in the person's mouth without substantially disturbing the impression formed in said coating by the model. Temporary dentures manufactured by this method are worn until the person's edentulous tissue, which was damaged on extraction of the person's teeth, has healed naturally and has been restored to a sound condition, whereupon permanent dentures are constructed. The pliable material used in preparing the temporary dentures may be an acrylic resin, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, cellulose acetate or cellulose nitrate and may include a plasticiser. The preferred pliable material is ethyl methacrylate/butyl methacrylate copolymer blended with plasticiser (e.g. butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate) and non-toxic solvent (e.g. ethyl alcohol).
