Abstract

1,100,594. Heat-setting films. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. 13 April, 1965 [21 April, 1964], No. 16556/64. Heading B5B. A travelling film of a polymeric thermoplastic material which has been stretched and oriented in the transverse and/or longitudinal directions is heat-set by passing it through a heating zone where it is flash-heated to a temperature between the temperature at which it was stretched and the melting point or softening point of the film material and restraining the film from shrinkage by cooling the film in intimate contact with the chilled peripheral surface of a rotating drum to reduce the film to a temperature at which the film on removal from the surface shows substantially no tendency to shrink, the film being caused to travel through the heating zone at a speed not less than the peripheral speed of the drum. The flash-heating of the film may be effected by radiant heat and the heating zone may extend beyond the line of initial contact between the film and the surface of the drum. The film may be supported on the peripheral surface of a rotating roller while passing through the zone in which it is flash-heated by radiant heat. The flash-heating of the film may be effected by passage over a rotating heated drum with the peripheral surface of which it makes intimate contact. When the film has been previously stretched in the longitudinal direction its degree of shrinkage in that direction during the heat-setting may be controlled by controlling the rate of passage of the film through the heating zone. When the film has previously been stretched in the transverse direction the degree of shrinkage in that direction is controlled by the speed of delivery of the heated film to the peripheral surface of the cooling drum. The cooling drum may be cooled by passing a cooling liquid through it. When the flashheating is effected by means of a radiant heater the position of the latter may be adjusted in a path parallel with the path of travel of the film to the cooling drum. When the flash-heating is effected by means of a drum, the latter is heated internally by electric heaters.
