A roof support has a roof-engageable assembly including a part 1 from the ends of which project the parts 2 each pivotable relative thereto about a position 3 spaced from the relevant projecting end thereof, the assembly being on hydraulic props 4 each engaging with a part 2 at a position between an end and a position 3 so that, when the parts 1 and 2 engage the roof, the force exerted by a prop 4 acts directly on the part 2 and through it on the part 1. At each position 3 a part 2 is secured to the part 1 by a hinge pin through which and the part 2 the prop 4 acts on the part 1. The prop 4 may act through the part 2 on a portion of the part 1 above the position 3 or may so act on the part 1 as well as at a position spaced therefrom, e.g. above the prop 4. The prop 4 may act through a block which may have a socket. Downward movement of a member 2 relative to the member 1 may be limited. In a modification each part 2 acts only through a bearing member above a pin 3.
