Abstract
1,100,590. Winding fabrics. H. KLEINDIENST, and I. WÍHRL. 8 June, 1965 [8 June, 1964; 9 March, 1965], No. 24256/65. Heading B6B. A plurality of strips 1 of towel issuing simultaneously side by side from a calender (not shown) are each wound on a core to produce a roll 9, each roll 9 being driven by contacting a roller 6, and all rollers being driven simultaneously. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a frame 2 contains a motor (not shown), which drives through a belt 4, a shaft 6 which acts as a plurality of driving rollers rests in bearing blocks 7. Vertical rails 8 extend upwardly from the blocks 7 and support the cores of the towel rolls 9 in vertical grooves therein. The shaft 6 is provided with a rough surface, e.g. a knurled or grooved surface or a rubber or emery cloth cover, to drive the rolls 9 by frictional contact therewith. The speed of the motor is synchronized to the operating speed of the calender. A certain degree of slip between the shaft 6 and the rolls 9 may be permitted in which case the shaft 6 is driven at a slightly excessive speed and the towels maintained in a stretched condition. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 2-7 (all not shown), a continuous shaft 11 is rotated by a belt pulley 10 driven by an infinitely variable drive (not shown). A chain drive 12 connects the shaft 11 to the shaft 6 which carries driving rollers 13, Fig. 4, driven by a freewheel device 14 when it is in its locked position. When piled-up towel 15 is to be taken up, Fig. 3, e.g. after the mounting of the leading end of the towel on a new winding core, a hand lever 16 is pressed down to lift a friction wheel 20 through an eccentric shaft 17 and levers 18, 19. The wheel 20 is pressed between the roller 13 and a wheel 21 secured to the shaft 11 and rotates at a substantially increased speed. Thus, the roller 13 outruns the speed of the shaft 6 to rapidly wind the pile 15 until the towel is stretched. Upon release of the lever 16, the mechanism is returned to the position of Fig 2 by a spring 22 and the roll 9 rotates again at a speed synchronized to that of the calender. In addition to the manual drive 16 an automatic drive to increase the speed of the shaft 6 may be provided. A holding-down device 28 is pivotally mounted at 27 on each side of the machine and has a comb-shaped form 29 carrying rods 30 extending across the machine. On pivotal movement of the device from the position of Fig. 5, to that of Fig. 6, the rods 30 press the slack towel into zig-zag form between stationary rods 31. The arm 29 of the device 28 closest to the roller 6 depresses a switch 26 to excite an electro-magnet 24 which acts on the lever 19 through a rod 25 to move the wheel 20 into frictional engagement with the shafts 6, 11 to increase the speed of the shaft 6. When the pile 15 has been completely rolled up, the tension of the towel lifts the device 28 to a determined extent to disconnect the arm 29 from the switch 26. A manually releasable catch 32, 33 to prevent oscillating movements of the device 28 may be provided.
