Abstract

1,100,507. Twisting wires together. SUNDSVALLS VERKSTADER A.B. 22 Nov., 1966, No. 52158/66. Heading B3E. [Also in Division B8] In a machine for bundling e.g. bars or coiled metal wires by binding with e.g. iron wires, of the type having an acouate wire guide path 3, part of which pivots outwards to admit the articles to be bound, a twisting head 51, and a cutter 60, the wire feeding mechanism includes a feed wheel 71 and a device sensing the raising of the wire 15 from the periphery of wheel 71 when sufficient wire has been fed. The sensing device causes several of the feed wheel 71 to. tighten the wire around the bundle, the wire end having been locked by a plunger 59. As described, one of the halves e.g. 3a of the guide path is swingeable to an open position. The. wire. feeding mechanism comprises a wire supply (not shown), rolls 79 which press down the wire 15 into a groove (72), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the wire feed wheel 71, and a wire guide 41. The sensing device includes a roll 76 mounted on a pivotable arm 74 and contacting the wire which actuates a limit switch 80 when the wire begins to deflect at the termination of feeding. A further limit switch 84 may be provided so that if the wire is pulled out of the twisting head so that the roll 76 no longer sustained by the wire drops on to the wheel periphery, the reversal of the feed wheel 71 is stopped. The twisting head 51, Fig. 5, see also Figs. 2-4 (not shown), includes two grooves 52, 53 for the wire arranged on either side of the plane of the wire guide 3 when in the starting position. A plunger 59 is provided to bend over clamp the forward end of the fed wire 15, Fig. 5a, and to act as a stop to terminate the feeding by causing the wire to rise from the wheel 71 as described above. A plunger 92 may ride in cam groove (91), Fig. 3, so that in its radially outermost position it actuates an electrical counter (not shown) to stop the twisting head rotating. To re-set the twisting head it is rotated in the opposite sense until an abutment in groove (91) engages plunger 92 to stop rotation. If the head is hydraulically driven the resulting fluid pressure increase actuates a switch to stop the drive. The twisting action is of the type where a motor 56 rotates a fly-wheel 55 through approximately one revolution whereupon it engages the twisting head 51 through a claw coupling (54), Fig. 4, the impact causing the wire to enter a notch 52a shearing off this portion against a cutter 60, Fig. 5b, and rotation proceeding for a given number of revolutions or until the wire ends slide out of the twisting head 51.
