Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1100442/C2/1> wherein each R is a hydrogen or an alkyl group, R1 is an n-alkyl group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms, R2 is a haloalk-1-ynyl group, -OR3 is a free, etherified or esterified hydroxy group and Q is a methylene or ethylene group, racemates thereof with their 13a -enantiomers, and their preparation by (a) halogenation and dehydrohalogenation of a D 5(10) compound, or (b) haloalkynylation of a 3-protected keto-17-keto-compound to produce a compound of formula <FORM:1100442/C2/2> wherein W is a 3,4-saturated ketal group or a 3,4-unsaturated enamino group, followed by hydrolysis, followed, if desired, in either case by (c) 17-etherification, or (d)17-acylation with hydrolysis of the 3-enol ester formed. The compounds of the invention have progestational, pituitary-gonadotrophic inhibiting and anti-estrogenic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration.
