Abstract

1,099,885. Tapping boxes; boxes. AMERICAN FLANGE & MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. July 29, 1966 [Aug. 2, 1965], No. 34112/66. Headings B8P and B8T. [Also in Division F2] A tap for insertion into a box (10), Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), containing a free liquid-filled bag (11), comprises a tapered probe 15, Fig. 3, which is forced in through the side of the box &c. and includes a cylindrical body 17 into which is telescoped the cylindrical body 41 of a rotatable valve head 16, the two cylindrical bodies having valve ports 32, 44 which can be aligned by turning the valve so as to dispense the liquid from the bag. A collar (21) around the probe 15 is formed with two radial notches 22, 23, adjacent to which but axially spaced therefrom being two lugs 24, 25. Inclined cam surfaces 26, 27 are formed on the edges of the notches 22, 23 and lugs 24, 25. The side wall of the box has an area (12) defined by a line of perforations with ears (13) corresponding to the crosssectional shape of the broad end of the probe 15 and its lugs 24, 25. The tap is forced into the box with the lugs 24, 25 aligned with the ears (13). A pointer 36 on the collar is directed leftwardly, so that the port 32 is at the righthand side of the cylindrical body 17. The area (12) in the box wall is pushed into the box by the tap, leaving a hole of the same shape. The lugs 24, 25 pass through the notches previously occupied by the ears (13). As the tap is forced into the box, its pointed end 19 pierces the flexible bag (11). The material of the bag (11) rides-up the tapered surface of the probe 15 and forms a liquid-tight seal above ports 20 leading into the probe. When the collar (21), which is of larger diameter than the hole in the box, engages the outside of the box wall, the tap is rotated by means of finger grip 30. Since the lugs 24, 25 now lie inside the box wall, the cam surfaces 26, 27 slide over the inner and outer sides of the wall, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), which is gripped between the lugs and the collar (21). In the final position, the pointer 36 is directed upwardly and the port 32 downwardly. The tap can now be opened by turning the valve head 16 within the cylindrical body 17 until the ports 32, 44 coincide. A stop 43 extending across a groove 42 in the valve head 16 abuts one or other of two diametrically opposite steps 34 at the end of the cylindrical body 17, to limit the angle through which the valve head may be turned. In a modification, a groove (47), Fig. 8 (not shown), around the probe and adjacent to the lugs (24 &c.), receives the edge of the hole pierced in the bag 11.
