Abstract

1,099,632. Laundering. LINEN SUPPLY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA. Feb. 12, 1965 [March 10, 1964], No. 6284/65. Heading D1A. [Also in Division F4] A process for restoring the heat-set in an article having a substantial content of polyester, or other fibre capable of taking a heatset, after washing or cleaning comprises; supporting the article in free, pendulous wet suspension, subjecting it to the action of hot air at an elevated temperature short of the heat-set temperature, the air having a moisture content to prolong the period of wetness, agitating the article whilst it is subject to the hot air action, and then allowing it to hang freely and reach a cool condition. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a housing, one of four walls of which is indicated at 12, in which is supported a rod 20 slidably mounted in the walls and having a handle 20a outside the housing by which it is actuated to shake the garments on hangers 22 supported by the rod. Air from the housing passes into a duct 36 which has a discharge branch controlled by a damper 40 and a branch controlled by another damper and leading to a duct 42. Duct 42 is connected through a blower 50 with a heat exchanger 46 where the air is heated by steam pipes with fins. Air may be drawn in from the atmosphere through duct 51 controlled by damper 58. A pipe (60) connected to the steam line 62 which feeds heat exchanger 46 discharges steam into the housing through a head (64) to maintain the moisture content of the air. The process may also be carried out in a continuous manner, the articles being carried by a conveyor through a processing tunnel at a suitable speed.
