Abstract

In a process for the replacement of multivalent ions in aqueous solutions by alkali-metal ions by ion-exchange, the ion-exchanger is regenerated by a concentrated solution of an alkali-metal salt and the effluent from the regeneration stage is treated with a precipitant for the multivalent ions containing alkali-metal ions, the precipitate is separated and the remaining solution of the alkali-metal salt is again employed for further regeneration of the ion-exchanger. The regenerant solution is usually a chloride while the precipitant is usually a silicate, phosphate or carbonate. The recycled regenerant is diluted during the process and make up salts are added. The process above may be applied to the removal of e.g. Zn++, Cu++Mn+++, Fe+++Cd++ and Al+++. Copper is precipitated as basic copper carbonate by alkali metal carbonate. Solutions of iron are oxidized before precipitation may be carried out in more than one stage, e.g. to separate the trivalent ions before the bivalent ones, or to separate calcium from magnesium.
