Abstract
1, 098, 650. Measuring gravitational forces. VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT GEOFIZICHESKIKH METODOV RAZVEDKI. Oct. 11, 1965, No.43019/65. Heading G1W. A system for measuring the vertical component of gravity comprises two masses 1, 2 carried substantially in vertical alignment by double-armed pendulums 3, 4 pivotally supported by horizontal torsion wires 6, 7 and the lower mass 1 joined by a wire 5 to the end of the pendulum 4 opposed to the mass 2. The pendulums 3, 4 have lateral projections 9, 8 to which the wires 6, 7 are secured and the outer ends of the wires 6, 7 are secured to frames 10, 12 connected to stationary parts by springs. The frame 12 is supported by horizontal torsion wires at right-angles to the pivotal axis of the pendulum 4 whose angle of inclination can be adjusted by adjusting the tension of the spring 14. The frame 10 is supported by torsion wires 11 co-axial with wires 6 but of higher torsional resistance. An optical system including lens 17, mirror 18, a light-source and pendulum extension 15 enable measurements to be read at a distance when the system is stationary. When the system is on a moving vehicle an electrical feedback measuring system is used and a similar system is used to compensate for the differential effect on the two masses of any horizontal acceleration.
