Abstract

Finely divided iron powder is produced by supplying a mixture of iron carbonyl vapour and gaseous ammonia to the lower end of a reactor having a plurality of vertically distributed zones defined by elements within the reactor casing, each of these zones having a temperature gradient and the temperature of the zones increasing up the reactor, as particularly exemplified the reactor may have three zones, the lowest of which has a gradient of 275 DEG -282 DEG C., the intermediate has a gradient of 285 DEG -298 DEG C., and the upper zone has a gradient of 302 DEG -312 DEG C. The reactor may be heated by sectional electric elements, or by a gas-heated jacket.
