Abstract
A body made by powder metallurgy comprises two mechanically inseparable components, the first being <TABS:1098443/C6-C7/1> with or without impurity amounts of S, C and O, the second being a refractory metal oxide having a free energy of formation (D F) at 1000 DEG C. greater than 98 Cals per gram atom of oxygen, a mean particle diameter (D) not greater than (0.5K+19) mm , where K is D F27 DEG c of the most stable oxide of any metal in the first component, D remaining in this range even after heating at 1205 DEG C. for two hours, the concentration of the second component being up to 5.6% by volume, 90% of the oxide particles having a diameter less than 3D and the body having a density of at least 99.5% of the theoretical. The metal particles may have an oxide coating thereon to the extent of 0.06A to 0.25A% based on the total composition, where A is the surface area of the powder in sq. metres per gramme, the oxide of the coating being an oxide of at least one of the metals of the composition. The body may be made by precipitating the refractory metal oxide and a hydrous, oxygen containing compound of the, or each, metal required in the metallic component, reducing the precipitate with a gas below 10(2.14 + 0.01k) DEG C., the resultant powder being consolidated below 1000 DEG C. to at least 99.5% of theoretical density.
