[Also in Division F4] A washing machine comprises circular cups or bowls 1, 2 supported on outer walls 4, 3 and defining a washing chamber between the upper bowl 2 and a diaphragm 8 secured .between the bowl flanges. The bowl 2 includes a cover part 13 which is removable for the insertion of the washing, water and a washing agent into the washing chamber. The upper bowl 2 has holes 16 therein and the diaphragm 8 is also preferably provided with holes 7 or that on pressure being developed by a pump 11 the washing liquid is circulated through the holes 7 and 16 and back to the pump past a heating coil 17. The delivery of the pump is such that the. diaphragm 8 rises under the pressure developed to a position 8' to compress the washing. The pump motor is then stopped, or the delivery short-circuited, so that the diaphragm with the washing falls. The cycle can then be repeated as required until the washing operation is completed. The liquid can then be drained and the cycle repeated with rinsing water. The various operations can be programme controlled. In a modification an additional impermeable diaphragm is provided which can be subjected, by the operation of suitable valves, to pump pressure when a final squeeze drying operation is required, to move upwards together with the perforated diaphragm to compress the washing without the washing liquid flowing through the latter diaphragm. In addition warm air derived from an air pump and a heater may be delivered between the diaphragms to pass through the washing. After passing through the washing the warm air may be passed through a condenser to extract the moisture. This air pump may also be employed for the lifting of the lower diaphragm during the washing operation. In a further arrangement steam generated by a heating coil is used to lift an imperforated diaphragm having hollow beads or ridges on its upper surface provided with holes through which washing liquid or warm air can be forced to flow into the washing chamber. Pressure switches can control the generation of steam so that after compressing the washing the diaphragm returns on condensation of the steam which may be assisted by water jets.
