Abstract
Pharmaceutical compositions in the form of emulsions or suspensions comprise one of the biocidal or biostatic substances:-p-chlorobenzyl alcohol, o-benzyl-p-chlorophenol, p-chloro-m-cresol, sodium o-phenyl phenolate, o-phenyl phenol, o-benzyl phenol, the benzyl, methyl, and methyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, the sodium salt of p-hydroxybenzoic acid propyl ester, 2,21-dihydroxy-5,51-dichlorodiphenyl methane, undecylenic acid, polymyxin B, neomycin sulphate, hydrocortisone or dexamethasone, and as the emulsion or suspension stabilizer, at least one amphoteric biocidal amino acid surfactant, which is characterized by having an aliphatic group containing at least 6 C atoms, at least one basic N atom, and at least one carboxyl group. Specified amino acids include N-hexadecyl glycine, N-(3-dodecylaminopropyl) - b - aminobutyric acid, and 3,5 - bis{{{2[2 - dodecylaminoethyl)amino]-ethyl}amino}methyl} salicylic acid.ALSO:A pharmaceutical preparation for topical application in the form of an emulsion or suspension comprises (1) one of the biocidal or biostatic substances:- p-chlorobenzyl alcohol, o-benzyl-p-chlorophenol, p-chloro-m-cresol, sodium-o-phenyl phenolate, o-phenyl phenol, o-benzyl phenol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid benzylester, p-hydroxybenzoic acid methylester, p-hydroxybenzoic acid propylester, the sodium salt of p-hydroxybenzoic acid propylester, 2,2\sv - dihydroxy - 5,5\sv - dichlorodiphenyl methane, undecylenic acid, polymyxin B, neomycin sulphate, hydrocortisone, or dexamethasone and (2) as the emulsion or suspension stabilizer, at least one biocidal amino-acid which is characterised by containing an aliphatic group having at least 6 carbon atoms, at least one basic N atom and at least one carboxyl group, or a salt thereof. Specified amino-acids include N-hexadecyl glycine, 3,5-bis[2\sT (2-dodecylaminoethyl)amino \sVethyl amino methyl] salicylic acid, and N-(3-dodecylaminopropyl)-b -aminobutyric acid. The preparations, which may be in the form of lotions or ointments, may be used in the treatment of bacterial or fungal skin diseases.
