Abstract

1,098,161. Photo-electric turbidometers. COW & GATE Ltd. and G. K. Charles. April 15, 1966 [April 20, 1965], No.16544/65. Headings G1A and G1X. A smoke detector comprises a chamber through which a sample of air may pass and two sealed compartments containing respectively a lightsource and detector and communicating with said chamber through apertures sufficiently small that the air in the compartments remains substantially static during operation of the apparatus. Air samples are drawn by suction from a tube 16, Fig. 2 and through the inspection tube 10. Light passes from the lamp 19 through aperture 31 and longitudinally through the air stream to a photocell in a similar compartment at the other end of the sighting tube. In a modification, the aperture 51, Fig. 4 which shows the outlet end of tube 10, is extended to form a tube 52 and a shield 54 further reduces the possibility of smoke entering the compartment 15. A fan may be provided, Fig. 6 (not shown) which is rotated by the incoming air to direct the same away from the aperture. Samples may be drawn in turn from a plurality of locations to be monitored for the outbreak of fire.
