Abstract

1,098,117. Coin-freed liquid dispensing apparatus. AVERY-HARDOLL Ltd. March 22, 1966 [June 9, 1965], No. 12615/66. Heading G4V. [Also in Division F1] In a coil-freed liquid dispensing apparatus, the volume of liquid dispensed at each operation is determined by the displacement of a piston 3 in a measuring cylinder 1, the stroke of the piston being limited by a stop 10 adjustable in position by means of a handle 76 which also sets indicators 26, 27 showing the unit price of the liquid and the volume to be delivered corresponding to the value of the coin. As described, the apparatus dispenses a mixture of petrol and oil. Two measuring cylinders 1, 2 are provided containing pistons 3, 4. The piston rods are provided with racks 5a, 6a co-operating with a freely rotatable gear wheel 54. A valve 8 at the upper end of the cylinders is movable between a first position in which the cylinder 1 communicates with the outlet 9 and cylinder 2 communicates with an oil reservoir 55, and a second position in which the cylinder 1 communicates with both the cylinder 2 and the petrol inlet 7. The inserted coin is received in a notch 31 in a cam 32. A second cam 38 operated by a handle 39 rotates the cam 32 through an abutment 78 engaging the coin. The cam 32 is connected by levers 34, 36 to the valve and moves the valve between its first and second positions. The cam 38 consists of a cylindrical portion formed with a notch 42 and a semi-circular part 47. Initial movement of the handle 39 brings the part 47 beneath the piston rod 5 to prevent pumping. A pawl 40 on a fixed shaft 79 engages the notch 42 to prevent reverse movement of the handle 39 at this stage. Continued movement brings the coin opposite a discharge channel 45. At the same time a second pawl 43 on the shaft 79 engages a notch 46 in the cam 32 and releases the pawl 40 from the cam 38 by means of a stop 48. The cam 38 returns to its initial position under spring action. The cam 32 remains in its new position with valve 8 in said second position. Petrol is pumped into the cylinder 1 via the conduit 7. As the piston 3 descends the piston 4 is raised, whereby the oil in cylinder 2 is delivered into cylinder 1. When the piston rod 5 engages the stop 10, the pistons 3, 4 are halted. The pressure in conduit 7 rises and actuates a piston 51, so that a pin 49 releases the pawl 43 from the cam 32. A spring 33 returns the cam to its initial position, moving valve 8 to said first position. The spring 72 moves the piston 3 upwardly to dispense the mixture, the cylinder 2 being charged with oil. The racks 5a, 6a may be interconnected via two relatively movable sets of pinions, whereby the proportions of petrol and oil may be adjusted. The sets of pinions are moved by rotating a shaft 66, Fig. 2 (not shown). The shaft 66 carries a notched disc 67 co-operating with a spring- loaded lever 68. When the pinions are incorrectly positioned relative to each other, the lever 68 is unable to enter a notch and engages a lug 71 on the cam 38 (Fig. 1) to prevent it rotating. In a modification, the stop is replaced by a stepped drum having figures around its side corresponding to the indicators 26, 27. Another form of stop consists of a cam having a hyperbolic profile. In the arrangement of Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), a drum 91 is provided having figures around its cylindrical surface. The drum carries a stop 92 which may be adjusted manually. An abutment 90 rotating with the gear 54, co-operates with the stop 92, to limit movement of the piston. In another embodiment, the cylinder 2 is arranged beneath the cylinder 1 with the piston rod 5 moving in the cylinder 2 to serve as the piston for delivering the oil. The adjustable stop 10 is arranged in the upper part of the cylinder 1. The apparatus illustrated in Fig. 9, dispenses one liquid only. The stop 10 is constituted by a screw threaded sleeve movable axially.
