Abstract

A graft polymer comprising an elastomeric hydrocarbon backbone having one or more appendant, non-elastomeric side chains in a non-terminal position, is formed by reacting a chlorinated or brominated hydrocarbon elastomer with a mono-alkali metal complex of a polymer anion. Specified elastomers are polyisobutylene and ethylene-propylene copolymers, which may contain small amounts of polymerized isoprene or octadiene respectively, and polybutadiene. The alkali metal complex is preferably of a polyvinyl aromatic compound, e.g. polystyrene, or it may be formed from polyvinyl pyridine. The metal is Na, K or Li and the complex is formed by polymerizing the appropriate monomer using an anionic catalyst which is an addition compound of the appropriate metal and an organic compound, e.g. butyl lithium. The metal polymer complex is reacted with the halogenated elastomer in an organic solvent to produce the graft polymer, some homopolymer being formed by reaction of the complex with impurities.
