Abstract

1,097,948. Steering endless track vehicles. BOFORS A.B. March 8, 1965 [March 6, 19641, No. 9784/65. Heading B7H. A steering system for an endless track vehicle comprises for each track a normally engaged clutch 15 (15<SP>1</SP>) between a gearbox and a track driving wheel 14 (14<SP>1</SP>), an hydraulic servo 22 (22<SP>1</SP>) for disengaging the clutch, a brake 28 (28<SP>1</SP>) engageable with a clutch output member 16 (16<SP>1</SP>), an hydraulic servo 32 (32<SP>1</SP>) for controlling the brake comprising a differential piston (34), (Fig. 4, not shown), normally biased to maintain the brake inoperative, a fluid pressure control valve 52 with a fluid pressure inlet 50 and an outlet 55 (55<SP>1</SP>) to the clutch and brake servos and valve actuating means 98, (98<SP>1</SP>) movable manually in sequence from an inoperative position to a first position in which the control valve outlet pressure is sufficient for disengagement of the clutch and to a second position in which the outlet pressure overcomes the piston bias and causes the brake to be applied. The control valve 52 comprises two valve spools 59, 59<SP>1</SP>, operable by respective right hand and left hand track levers 98, 98<SP>1</SP>, and a cut-off valve 90, operable by both levers. The valve spool 59 is acted upon by the opposing forces of a spring 78 and of the hydraulic fluid in a chamber 74, which is at the pressure in the outlet line 55, and maintains an output pressure determined by the compression of the spring 78. On movement of the lever 98 from the neutral position shown into the first operative position, when a spring loaded sleeve 85 just touches a spring retainer 79, the cut-off valve 90 closes the passage between the fluid inlet 50 and a passage 67 leading through a line 58 to a reservoir 44 and the valve spool 59 is pushed to the left by the spring 78 to supply fluid to the servos 22 and 32 at a pressure sufficient to release the clutch but insufficient to move the differential piston (34). On further movement of the lever 98 the spring 78 is further compressed increasing the pressure in the line 55 sufficiently to operate the differential piston and to apply the brake 28. Movement of both levers 98 and 98<SP>1</SP> together declutches and then brakes both tracks.
