Abstract

<PICT:1097769/C6-C7/1> High purity aluminium foil is etched for the production of electrolytic condensers by passing the foil through an etching solution at a rate up to 250 feet per hour and applying a current in the range 0.39 to 9.36 amps/sq. inch. The solution, e.g. 10% NaCl in de-ionized water is at an elevated temperature such as 90 DEG C. - 100 DEG C. Foil from roll 11 passes through cleaning tanks 12 and 13 containing respectively a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent and de-ionized water. The foil passes over a power roll 18 which is connected to one pole of a source of electric current and then into the electrolyte in which it passes in succession between pairs of cathode plate 22, the potential drop between the foil and the successive adjacent cathode plates reducing due to resistance of the foil. Tanks 30-38 contain rinsing solutions and after passing through drier 40 the foil is wound on reel 42.
