Abstract

A protective layer is formed on a scintillator body by coating the body with a compound having an isocyanate group at each end of the molecule, and then exposing the layer to water vapour to polymerize the layer. The compounds may be formed by the reaction of a polyether with a polyisocyanate compound. In an example, an a -particle detector comprises a disc of polymethylmethacrylate coated with a layer of activated zinc sulphide and protected from light by a number of aluminium layers separated by plastic layers, the whole being dipped in a polyurethane solution of oil-free one component polymethane resin which polymerizes in atmospheric water vapour. To permit escape of evolved carbon dioxide, the polymer layer is preferably less than 30 micron thick, successive layers being used if necessary. Reference is made to organic fluorescent substances, p - terphenyl (1,4-diphenylbenzene); 1,4 - bis - 2 - (5 - phenyloxazolyl) - benzene; 2,5 - diphenyloxazol and 1,1,4,4 - tetraphenylbutadiene and inorganic powders including activated zinc sulphide, cadmium sulphide, calcium tungstenate, sodium iodide, caesium iodide, potassium iodide and some fluorides.
