Abstract

<PICT:1096411/C6-C7/1> A cutting edge is formed or finished on razor blade strip in continuous form or razor blade blanks on a conveyer belt by selective electrolytic metal removal. The electrolyte may comprise phosphoric acid with chromic acid or glycerol. Additives may be included to control conductivity and inhibit decomposition of the bath and degassing may be assisted by the inclusion of a wetting agent. During the electrolytic removal the body of the blade or strip is protected from the electrolyte. Typically a razor blade strip 9 is passed lengthwise through a conductive tube 10 to which cathodic connection is made, the strip resting on a spring mounted platen 20 to which anodic contact is made outside the tube and being pressed against a conducting cover strip 21, platen 20 and cover strip 21 being insulated from the tube by insert 22, 23 and masking the body of the razor blade strip from the electrolyte which is fed by a pump along the tube and externally recirculated. After the metal removal step the strip is washed and dried. Projections 10f, extending to within 20 mils of the edge of the strip, of which only 3 mms. at each margin may be uncovered, are provided if both forming and finishing of the cutting edge is to be effected. For finishing only, the projections 10f may be dispensed with A. C. or A. C. super-imposed on D. C. may be used instead of D. C. and the power supply may provide a constant voltage, constant current or a cyclically varying voltage. A typical current density used is 200 amps/sq.in. Forming of the blade may be effected by impinging jets of electrolyte from one or both sides of the non-immersed strip. A blade with a gradual convex curvature towards the tip may be obtained. The process may be applied to making single edged blades or cutting edges comprising a small metal insert in a supporting body of plastic or ceramic, while the apparatus shown may also be used for cleaning the strip.
