Abstract

9,10 - Dihydro - 4H - benzo - [4,5] - cyclohepta-[1,2-b]-thiophene derivatives of the formula <FORM:1096344/C2/1> in which R1 signifies an alkyl radical, containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive, each of R2 and R3 signifies a hydrogen atom or one of them signifies a hydrogen atom and the other an atom of chlorine or bromine, and their acid addition salts, are produced by a process in which water is split off from a compound of the formula <FORM:1096344/C2/2> and, when an acid addition salt is required, the product is reacted with an organic or inorganic acid. The starting material is obtained by reduction of a compound of the formula <FORM:1096344/C2/3> which may be obtained by reacting a 9,10-dihydro - 4H - benzo - [4,5] - cyclohepta - [1,2-b]-thiophen-4-one of the formula <FORM:1096344/C2/4> with a pyrrolidone-(2) derivative of the formula <FORM:1096344/C2/5> in the presence of an alkali metal amide or hydride. The products having the first formula may be used as pharmaceuticals either on their own or in the form of appropriate medicinal preparations for administration either orally, enterally or parenterally; suitable adjuvants are for tablets and dragees: lactose, starch, talc and stearic acid, and for injectable solutions: water, alcohols, glycerine and vegetable oils. These pharmaceuticals have an antidepressive effect and are preferably used in the form of their physiologically acceptable, water-soluble salts.
