Abstract

1,096,340. Freezing soil. GAZ DE FRANCE. Dec. 22, 1965 [Dec. 23, 1964], No. 54466/65. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F4] In constructing a ground reservoir for the storage of cold liquefied gas, e.g. methane, by drilling a circular series of holes through earth soil 2 and into bed rock 3, passing refrigerant, e.g. brine, through pipes 4 in the holes 1 to form an annular zone of frozen earth and from within which zone excavating soil to form the reservoir 9 having a frozen side wall and a bottom 9a, Fig. 4, the latter is frozen by passing refrigerant through a network of coiled pipes 13 installed on said bottom 9a. The pipes 13 are embedded in a layer of wet sand 14 which, when frozen, is covered by a layer 18 of expanded polyurethane or polyvinylchloride which in turn is covered by sheet aluminium or copper 19 having expansion joints 19a; the periphery of the sheet being sealingly embedded in a trough 20 in the inner face of the reservoir wall which is coated with mortar or expanded synthetic material. A roof 8 comprises radially arranged metal I-sectioned struts (21) Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown) having their outer ends supported by a peripheral concrete ring 7 and covered by spaced outer and inner metal plates (27, 25) between which is disposed heat insulation material, a foam lined flexible membrane 28, Fig. 7, being suspended from the struts (21) with its periphery sealingly embedded in a trough in the concrete ring 7. Liquid inlet and/or gas outlet pipes 39 and a pipe 33 housing a liquid outlet pipe 35 and an associated pump 34 extend from above ground through the reservoir wall.
