Abstract

1,096,028. Photo multipliers. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 8, 1965 [April 1, 1964], No. 13346/64. Heading H1D. A photo multiplier comprises a plurality of photo-emissive cathodes 4, 5 which are insulated from one another, and respond to light in differing wavelength ranges, which ranges may be completely distinct or may overlap. Any one cathode may be operated at any time to produce photo-electrons which are directed into a common multiplying section 2. As shown two cathodes 4, 5 are inclined towards a window 6 and are separated by an electrostatic screen 8. Alternatively screen 8 may be omitted, the cathode not in use being biased to direct electrons from the other cathode through apertured electrode 7. Also, three or more cathodes may be disposed on a conical surface. The cathodes may be respectively of tungsten and nickel, or of caesium telluride and antimony sensitized with caesium. The window 6 may be curved or formed as a lens, and the boxshaped dynodes 2 may be replaced by slatted dynodes, the slats of adjacent dynodes being oppositely inclined.
