Abstract

Semi-burnt magnesia compacts suitable for further processing into low-porosity refractories, are produced by firing magnesium hydroxide under a pressure sufficient and so applied as to maintain it in a compact shape, up to a sufficiently high temperature and for sufficient time to completely calcine it to magnesium oxide but to leave the latter substantially unsintered. The firing may be continued to a final temperature of 1000 DEG C. and the compacting pressure 1-100 kg./cm2. The compacting may be effected in that the mass being heated is kept under substantially constant pressure in a mould or in that the wax is heated while it is being extruded. The magnesium hydroxide starting material may be admixed with up to 40% by weight based on the weight of the mixture of active or dead-burnt magnesia and also with a plasticizer, e.g. alkali metal salts such as sodium chloride and readily decomposable magnesium salts such as the chloride or sulphate. The compacted shape may be that which it is desired to preserve in subsequent firing operations, e.g. conversion into dead-burnt magnesia and then to refractories. Alternatively, the compacts may be broken up into grog for further processing.
