Abstract

[Also in Division B8] An apparatus for applying powdered coating material to an article comprises a ring of jets 13 supplied with compressed air and adapted to fluidize powder within a container 2, 3, an outlet conduit 8 for the powder in suspension, a distributor head, not shown, connected to the conduit and provided with a rotating distributor disc, and means for maintaining an electrostatic field between at least part of the head and the article to be coated. In operation the container, which is mounted on tapered bearing surfaces 6, 7, is arranged with the jets 13 lowermost so that the air passes through a large proportion of the powder in the container. An extension 9 of the conduit 8 within the container is provided with slots 10 and contains a ball valve. Each jet 13, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) is provided with a powder trap. These jets may be replaced by at least one entraining device, Fig. 5 (not shown) including a central air jet (57), a ring of converging air jets (58) and a powder intake opening (59). The entrained powder is fed by at least one conduit (55) to a rotating disc surrounded by a shroud providing a plurality of air jets, at least some or which are convergent. Three conduits may supply a single disc and a plurality of entraining devices may supply a plurality of discs. The container may include a ball-valve device to allow air to enter as the powder leaves.
