Abstract
Reinforced thermoplastic organic polymeric material is prepared by incorporating a mineral filler into the thermoplastic material, (i) the mineral filler having been first treated with a silane containing one or more reactive groups, and a compatible polymer containing groups reactive with the silane having been either coated on the silane treated filler or incorporated in the thermoplastic material, or (ii) an adduct of such a silane and such a polymer having been coated on the filler before incorporation thereof in the thermoplastic material, or such an adduct having been incorporated in the thermoplastic material before incorporation of the filler therein. Specified thermoplastic polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1, poly - 4 - methylpentene - 1, polyamides, polyoxymethylenes, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, copolymers of styrene with butadiene or acrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, methyl and ethyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic, maleic and fumaric acids, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, maleic anhydride or vinylidene chloride. Plasticizers may be present. Specified fillers are glass fibres, asbestos, glass plates and mica. Specified silanes are vinyl trichlorosilane, g -aminopropyl triethoxysilane, vinyl triethoxysilane, vinyl triacetoxy silane, ethylaminotrichlorosilane, a -glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane and methacryloxy silanes. Specified reactive polymers are those containing epoxy, carboxyl, carboxylic anhydride, amino and hydroxyl groups; examples of polymers compatible with ethylene and propylene polymers being glycidyl methacrylate/ethylene copolymers and propylene polymers modified with maleic anhydride. In Examples (1) glass fibres treated with an adduct of an ethylene/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer and g -aminopropyl triethoxysilane are compounded with polypropylene, and (2) glass fibres treated with g -aminopropyl triethoxysilane are compounded with a mixture of polypropylene and maleic anhydride modified polypropylene.
