A machine for de-barking or peeling logs comprises a feed or propulsion roller 60 adapted to frictionally engage with the circumference of the log and rotate it and advance it across the face of a cutter disc 17, and a loading roller 40 which bears on the log from above and holds it in contact with the circumference of the roller 60 and with the face of the cutter disc. The machine has a frame 10 having a motor 14 driving a shaft 16 carrying the cutter disc 17 which has slots 18 for the cutter blades. A shaft 30 has a handle 31 and is connected by a telescopic link 33 to a bracket 35 which is rockable about a pivot 37 and has an arm 39 carrying the loading roller 40, rocking of the handle raising the roller. A telescopic link 46, 47 is also connected to the bracket 35 and to one arm 50 of a three-armed lever, a second arm 52 being adjustably connected to a spring-loaded rod 54, and a third arm 51 being connected by a link 55 to a sub-frame 58 which carries the feed roller 60 and is movable about a column 59; the feed roller 60 is driven through reduction gearing 63 from the motor shaft 16. Upon rocking of the handle 31, the roller 40 is raised and the feed roller 60 is moved away from the cutter disc against the action of spring 57 to permit a log to be inserted in the machine. The linkage is such that outward movement of the roller 60 and upward movement of the roller 40 are initially nearly uniform, but upon further movement, the loading roller 40 moves a greater distance than the feed roller.
