Abstract
1,095,111. Purifying exhaust gases. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. March 10, 1965 [March 11, 1964], No. 10201/64. Heading F1B. I.C. engine exhaust gases are mixed with combustion products from a combustion chamber 15, the mixture then passing through a number of passages (not shown) in a refractory block 29 which is heated by the combustion products to a temperature sufficient to cause at least some of the combustible components of the exhaust gases to burn. From inlet 11, untreated exhaust gases flow through an annular passage between a longitudinally corrugated cylinder 16 and an outer casing 10, passages 17 and passages 19 between the cylinder 16 and a wall 13, to a region downstream of the combustion chamber outlet. The combustion chamber is supplied with fuel from a burner nozzle 24 and with air via inlet 21, radial passages 23 and annular passage 20. A further air inlet, Fig. 3 (not shown), surrounding the burner nozzle may be provided. The gases leaving the block 29 pass to an outlet 12 via passages 18 which alternate with the passages 17.
