Abstract

Nitrofuran derivatives, some of which are novel, of the formula <FORM:1094903/C2/1> in which Z is an oxygen atom or the group <FORM:1094903/C2/2> , where R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, hydrdroxyalkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl, and Y represents two atoms or groups, which are the same or different, selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, trifluoromethyl, carboxy or esterified carboxy, are prepared by condensing a compound of the formula <FORM:1094903/C2/3> in which X is a hydroxy group or the group -NHR, with a methyl or ethyl 5-nitro-2-furimidate acid-addition salt in an alcohol under substantially anhydrous conditions. The novel compounds are those in which Y and Z are as defined above, with the proviso that Y represents at least one atom or group other than hydrogen when Z represents an oxygen atom or the group <FORM:1094903/C2/4> Antimicrobial compositions comprise one of the above novel nitrofuran derivatives in admixture with a pharmaceutically-acceptable diluent or carrier. The compositions may be in the form of an animal feedstuff or a premix for an animal feedstuff. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,058,565.
