Abstract

Resinous phosphonitrilic polymers are prepared by reacting alkyl phosphates of the general formula RnHmPO4 where n = 1, 2 or 3, n + m = 3 and R is alkyl, with a phosphonitrilic chloride, and eliminating alkyl chloride. The alkyl phosphate may contain the same or different alkyl groups, which may have 1-6 carbon atoms. The reactants may be in a molar ratio of alkyl phosphate to phosphonitrilic chloride of 1:1.5 to 1:3. The reactants may be heated together at reflux in an inert solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene or homologues thereof.ALSO:Glass is coated with a phosphonitrilic polymer (see Division C1) prepared by reacting an alkyl phosphate of formula RnHmPO4 where n = 1, 2 or 3, n + m = 3 and R is alkyl with a phosphonitrilic chloride and eliminating Rcl. Pigment grade titania may be coated with the polymer. The polymer may be applied as a solution in e.g. acetone, and hardened by heating above 100 DEG C, e.g. at 45 DEG C for 30 minutes.
