Abstract

1,094,027. Automatic control of air/fuel ratio. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Sept.13, 1966 [Oct.1, 1965j, No.40912/66. Heading G3R. [Also in Division F4] In a method of monitoring the fuel-air ratio of the flame of burners in an industrial furnace by directing a beam of attenuated microwaves through the flame and measuring the loss of microwave energy, microwaves in the range of 30 to 300 megacycles per second generated by a Klystron 3 are passed by connector 4 to isolator 5 and then to attenuator 7 and to a switch S1 which is timed to direct the signal for a fraction of a second to each of antennas 12, 13, 14 and then to repeat the cycle. Antennas 18, 19, 20 receive the signal through the flames 15, 16, 17, of burners A, B, C directly or via a reflector and pass it via a switch S2 synchronized with switch S1 to a detector 25 and via an amplifier 28 to an error amplifier 30 where it is matched against the command received from the attenuator via conductor 31 and to a servo device 33 linked to a visual indicator 36 containing a differential measuring circuit and a corrective signal is passed to the burner via line 37 and switch S3 which is synchronized with switch S2. The signal is transmitted to air regulators 41, 42, 43 supplying primary air to the burners and operated by electric motor valves or any other type of automatic valve to adjust the fuel-air ratio, the fuel supply rate being constant.
