Abstract

1,093,617. Electrostatic separation. LODGE COTTRELL Ltd. Aug. 17, 1965 [Sept. 1, 1964], No. 35667/64. Heading B2J. [Also in Division H2] Electrostatic precipitation apparatus comprises means whereby a desired proportion of an additive such as sulphur trioxide, ammonia or phosphorus is admitted to the flue through which the dust laden gases pass in order to increase the efficiency of precipitator. A valve V, through which liquid sulphur trioxide is admitted to a weir box 33 from one or other of two reservoirs 30a, 30b, is controlled by means of a relay and wattmeter device so that the amount of the sulphur trioxide used is controlled by the electrical conditions in the precipitator. The liquid sulphur trioxide passes to a conduit 34 and a conical chamber 35, surrounded respectively by heaters 36, 38 whereby the liquid substance assumes a gaseous state. The gaseous sulphur trioxide then passes along a conduit 17 in which it is mixed with hot dry air, injected by way of a conduit 21, the mixture finally issuing into the flue 20 through perforated tubes 19. The concentration of sulphur trioxide in the mixture is maintained below 12¢% and the quantity of sulphur trioxide supplied to the gas in the flue is not more than 50 parts per million.
