A circular recess 3 in a piston crown forms the major part of a combustion chamber and is formed with chamfered edges 4b which, reduce the tendency for the engine to "run on" after the ignition is switched off. Diametrically opposed recesses 6, for accommodating the valve heads, adjoin, but are shallower than, the recess 3 and are also formed with chamfered edges 7.
