Abstract
1,093,312. Machinery guards. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1965 [Jan. 15, 1964], No. 1495/65. Heading F2J. [Also in Division F1] A gas turbine engine has outer casing portions 2, 8 surrounding the turbine rotor blades 6 and supporting the guide vanes 10 respectively. A ring 12 is mounted within easing 2 by upstream lugs 38 on the ring engaging radial slots 28 in a fixed disc 30 and by downstream lugs 40 engaging radial slots 34 in an inwardly projecting flange 20 on the casing 2. The ring 12, is of material such as steel or fibre-glass so that in the event of fragments breaking off the rotor the ring can move outwardly by distortion of fracture of the lugs to absorb the fragment energy and prevent penetration of the casing 2. An annular spring 14 retained by a spacer ring 16 maintains concentricity between the casing and ring 12. A shroud ring 22 is similarly mounted by lugs engaging slots 28, 34, an annular spring 24 maintaining concentricity of the shroud. Concentric fragment energy absorption rings 42, 44, similar to ring 12, extend downstream from flange 20, lugs on the rings engaging with alternate slots 34 in the flange not occupied by the lugs 40 of ring 12. At their downstream ends rings 42, 44 are located by lugs 62, 64 respectively engaging slots 60 in a fixed disc 52.
