Abstract

Water-soluble polymeric compounds which are made up at least partly of recurrent units of configuration -CH(COX1)-CH(COX2)- in which X1 and X2 are respectively hydroxyl groups and amine radicals of the formula -NH-(CH2)nNYZ in which Y and Z independently are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups containing 1-6 carbon atoms and n is 0-6 with the proviso that the ratio of amine radicals to hydroxyl groups in the water-soluble polymeric compound is 0.15 to 1:1, preferably 0.4 to 1:1. In examples (a)-(i) maleic anhydride is copolymerized with styrene in ethyl acetate in presence of benzoyl peroxide and then reacted with (a) N-dimethyl aminopropylene-diamine, (b) asymmetrical dimethyl-hydrazine, (c) and (d) N-dimethylamino-propylene-diamine, (e) N-dimethylamino-propylene-diamine, (g) N - dimethylamino - ethylene-diamine, (h) N - dimethylamino - propylene-diamine, (i) N - methyl - butyl - propylene-diamine; (k) equimolar amounts of maleic anhydride and vinyl acetate are polymerized and then reacted with N-dimethylamino-propylene-diamine. Molecular weights are within the range 500-80,000.ALSO:Chrome leather which has been mask-tanned and/or retanned with synthetic and/or vegetable agents and/or pre- or after-treated with anionic complex formers is dyed in the presence of a water-soluble polymeric compound or a salt thereof made up at least partly of recurrent units of the configuration -CH(COX1) -CH(COX2)- in which X1 and X2 are respectively hydroxyl groups and amine radicals of the formula -NH(CH2)n-NYZ in which Y and Z independently of one another are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups containing 1-6 carbon atoms and n is a number from 0-6 with the proviso that the ratio of amine radicals to hydroxyl groups in the water-soluble polymeric compound is 0.15 to 1:1 preferably 0.4 to 1:1. The amount of the above polymeric compound is in general 0.2-2% referred to the showed weight of the chrome leather, azo, metal complex and triphenylmethane dyes are referred to. The leather is first tanned, then retanned in known manner, then neutralised and dyed in a drum containing 250% of water at 55-60 DEG C the polymeric compounds being added before dyeing or in the course of the dyeing operation, after each addition of dye 8.5% formic acid was added corresponding to five times the amount of dye previously applied and the leather was milled each time for 15 minutes.
